Email Marketing in Ghana: Your Cheapest Source of Repeat Customers

Brand Afro Team31 August 2026

Here is something that surprises most business owners. When you post on social media, only a small slice of your followers actually see the post, because the platform's algorithm decides who sees what. When you send an email, it lands quietly in the inbox of nearly everybody on your list. No algorithm blocking you. That list belongs to you.

That is why email is the cheapest, most reliable way to turn one-time buyers into repeat customers, including here in Ghana.

Why email beats the algorithm

Social media platforms rent you your audience. Email lets you own it. If your Instagram account gets restricted tomorrow, and it happens to businesses every week, everything you built there is frozen. Your email list survives, because it lives on your side.

Three reasons it works so well for Ghanaian businesses:

  • Almost free. Most email tools price by list size, and small lists cost nothing. Sending to 500 customers is free.
  • People check email. Not as quickly as WhatsApp, but reliably, especially the working professionals with money to spend.
  • It is where calm decisions happen. Offers, reminders and receipts get read properly, without competing with forty new dance videos.

We Ghanaians do business with people we trust, and trust grows through relationship. Email is how you keep that relationship warm between purchases.

Building an owned customer email list

Building a list the right way

One rule above all: every contact joins because they said yes. Buy an email list and you are not marketing, you are disturbing strangers, and Gmail will quietly send all your future emails to spam.

Easy, honest ways to collect names:

  • Ask for the email at checkout or booking, with a simple "would you like to hear about our offers and new stock?"
  • Give something useful in return: a first order discount, a size guide, a care guide, or first notice of sales
  • Put a signup link in your Instagram bio and in your WhatsApp auto-reply
  • If you run a restaurant or salon, keep a simple signup card at the counter: "join our list for monthly specials"

A small list of 300 people who want your emails will outsell a bought list of 30,000 who don't. That is not a slogan, it is arithmetic.

Turning one purchase into a repeat purchase

What to actually send

Customers don't want essays. They want short, warm and useful. A healthy mix for a small business:

  • A welcome email the moment somebody joins: who you are, what they will get, and their discount if you promised one
  • New arrivals and restocks. The plainest email in the world, "it's back," is often the highest earning one you will send
  • Genuine offers. Real discounts, not "50% off" countdowns that never end
  • Useful content. A caterer sharing "five dishes that impress at an engagement ceremony" earns opens for months
  • Occasional behind-the-scenes, the human side that makes people root for your business

Write the way you would chat with a customer on WhatsApp. Short sentences. One clear message per email. One obvious button.

Email vs WhatsApp: do you have to choose?

No, and you shouldn't. They are teammates, not rivals.

WhatsApp is conversational and urgent, perfect for flash offers, order updates and one-to-one service. Email is better for anything longer: monthly offers, useful guides, catalogs, and anything a customer may want to find again later. Here in Ghana, WhatsApp is where the daily market happens; email is your shop's memory.

Many of our clients WhatsApp the urgent things and email the valuable things. The email archive quietly becomes a catalog of everything you sell that customers can always search.

A monthly rhythm you can actually keep

Fancy systems fail and simple ones run for years. Start like this:

  1. One email a month. One well-made message with one offer and one piece of useful content.
  2. Same week every month, so customers learn to expect you, like a market day.
  3. Check three numbers after each send: how many opened it, how many clicked, and what it sold.

When that feels easy, add a second email, maybe a small mid-month offer. But never send for the sake of sending. An email that says nothing trains people to ignore the next one.
